Established nearly 30 years ago, MU's two-year family medicine fellowship program was designed
to prepare physicians for careers in academic medicine. Since then, we have trained nearly 75 physicians
and researchers who continue MU's tradition of innovation as they build the specialty of family medicine
across the country.
In 1979, MU became one of five institutions awarded funding from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to
support the first Family Medicine Academic Fellowship Program. We graduated our first class of fellows in 1982.
Current MU Family Medicine Chair Hal Williamson, MD, MSPH, was a member of this class.
A two-year program that leads to a master's degree, fellowship training includes classroom and independent study,
clinic time, and field experiences. The original program was focused on research, but in 1992 we added a geriatrics
fellowship, a sports medicine fellowship in 1996, and a master educator track in 2001.
Until new funding sources are identified, we are temporarily not accepting fellows into our two-year academic fellowship program.

The geriatric fellowship program is open to board-certified and residency-trained family physicians or internists.
Geriatrics Medicine Fellows meet the requirements for the Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Geriatric Medicine
after a year of intense clinical training. Fellows attend weekly conferences and participate in clinical
experiences focused on geriatric medicine, palliative care, geropsychiatry, neurology, and evidence-based
medicine. In addition, Fellows complete a multidisciplinary graduate course on function in aging.
