Residency Training Sites
Residents have their private practice clinic in one of
four family medicine clinics.
- South Providence Family Medicine Clinic
resembles a metropolitan group practice. Located minutes from University Hospital,
this clinic draws most of its patients from the Columbia area. Residents learn to
work in a busy suburban clinic.
- Callaway Physicians is in Fulton, a community
of 13,000 located 25 miles southeast of Columbia. This rural practice provides comprehensive
and continuing health care to a large and diverse patient population. While this
clinic is located in a rural community, patients and physicians have access to Callaway
Community Hospital, which is located across the street from clinic.
- Fayette Medical Clinic is in Fayette, a town
of 2,800 located 30 miles northwest of Columbia. This rural practice provides a
wide spectrum of family medicine services. Residents gain valuable experience in
Fayette, understanding the importance of a rural clinic with no hospital in town.
- Family Health Center is a federally funded
community health center established to expand primary care services to uninsured
and underinsured patients in the Columbia area. Residents provide medical and social
care to this diverse set of patients, including a significant number of expectant
mothers and Spanish-speaking patients.
Residents train at three area facilities.
Hospital is a 274-bed hospital that offers a wide range of services, and is
the only level I trauma center in Mid-Missouri. Within the hospital, our residents
also work in the Emergency Department, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), Medical Intensive
Care Unit (MICU), and on our Family Medicine inpatient service as well as the Geriatrics
and Palliative Medicine consult services.
- Callaway Community Hospital
is a 49-bed hospital with an ER, full range of inpatient
and outpatient services, and inpatient geriatric psychiatry unit. Located across the street from our Fulton clinic, Callaway
Hospital provides important training opportunities to MU Family Medicine Residents.
- MU Women’s
and Children’s Hospital, a 189-bed MU Health Care hospital, is located in east
Columbia. This houses the Family Birth Center where we care for patients on the obstetrics and Family Maternity Care service. It is working toward baby friendly designation, and two low-intervention birth rooms are slated to open summer 2015. We also care for pediatric patients at Women’s and Children’s
