Betsy Garrett honored at 2009 Tribute to Women ceremony

Betsy Garrett, MD, MSPH, was honored at the 2009 Tribute to Women ceremony held at MU on Thursday, March 12. This award is given on behalf of the Chancellor's Committee on the Status of MU Women.

The Tribute to MU Women honorees are nominated by members of the MU community and must be active MU faculty, staff or students who have worked to help create an environment of equity, fairness and justice for all women on the MU campus; have respected the diversity of women's experiences; and have helped promote the advancement of women through education, advocacy, support and activism.

Steven Zweig, MD, MSPH, interim chair of Family and Community Medicine, introduced Garrett at the ceremony and explained the many ways that she has made a positive difference for women. The contributions she’s made throughout her career have helped change the face of women in medicine, not only at MU but on the national scene, he said.

In his nomination letter, Zweig described the honor Garrett received in 1999 in being elected the first woman president of MU's Medical Alumni Organization. Early during her two-year term as president, she learned that the year 2000 marked the 100-year anniversary of the first female physician's graduation from MU's School of Medicine. Dr. Garrett did extensive research on early women graduates of MU's medical school, and her efforts led to several articles and presentations.

"Dr. Garrett is humbled and inspired by these women and considers them courageous role models who helped open doors for the next generation of female doctors," Zweig wrote in the letter. "She celebrates their stories and the stories of other women medical school graduates who have made tremendous contributions to their communities and profession.

"Betsy Garrett is one of these women. She is a fine human being who is admired by all for her leadership abilities, integrity, compassion, humor and intelligence."
