Julie Kapp named faculty scholar

Julie Kapp, MPH, PhD, an assistant professor in Family and Community Medicine, has been named a Margaret Proctor Mulligan Endowed Faculty Scholar. Funding received from this award will support her breast cancer research.

In 2008, the estate of Margaret Proctor Mulligan — a longtime Columbia resident, breast-cancer survivor and supporter of the MU School of Medicine — provided more than $6 million for faculty research positions that “enhance efforts to treat patients with two of the most prevalent diseases, cardiovascular disease and cancer.”

Mulligan died in 2007 at age 97. She was an advertising manager at the Tribune, managed retail stores and eventually joined her father’s real estate business. Her gift created 12 endowed faculty positions, more than any other gift in the history of MU. Eleven of the positions have been awarded to the medical school professors, including:

Paul Dale, chief of surgical oncology and director of the Margaret Proctor Mulligan Breast Health and Research Program; George Davis, professor of medical pharmacology and physiology; Michael Davis, professor of medical pharmacology and physiology; Dongsheng Duan, associate professor of molecular microbiology and immunology; Julie Kapp, assistant professor of family and community medicine; Carl Kardinal, professor of hematology and oncology; Kattesh Katti, professor of radiology and physics, senior research scientist at the MU Research Reactor Center; Gerald Meininger, director of the Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center and professor of medical pharmacology and physiology; Steven Segal, professor of medical pharmacology and physiology; Shivendra Shukla, professor of medical pharmacology and physiology; and Sharon Stack, professor of pathology and anatomical sciences.

The final Margaret Proctor Mulligan Distinguished Professor in Medical Research will be awarded to a chief of cardiovascular surgery. MU is recruiting for the position.
